Kau Jam, Kaw Jam, Kau Yam, Kaw Yam, "Cow Jump" - The rice that can even make the cow jumps!

22 March 2008....

Previously CH already introduced about the mouth-watering kelantan food "kau jam". Today, after the Woody MIA(Missing in action) incident, CH get to know Woody auntie better and she offered to cook us the kau jam for appreciating us for assisting her in searching of woody.

Let's CH explain kau jam in more detail. Kau Jam is a Thai word, the "kau" means rice, and "jam" means mix. The combination of "kau jam" means mix rice, in "scientific" term, they will call this chlorophyll rice. The rice is cooked with 7 kinds of herb juice, which makes the rice green in colour. The rice will be mixed with several vegetable like bean sprouts, cucumber, and long beans, red onion, fried minced coconut, and lemon grass(serai). The rice will be topped with Budu and then we can start to mix it(jam). The kau jam taste much better after it "jam" with steam kembung fish or fried ikan kuning.

* Budu - a kind of pickled fish sauce which similar to "cenceru"(pickled shrimp sauce). Budu is a fish version. Budu is to add with lime juice, chopped-chillis, and red onion before it served to mix with kau jam. Sour manggo is another option.

Typical ingredient of kau jam:

Typical 1 portion of kau jam:
CH strongly recommends to serve it with keropok(deep fried fish biscuit). Try it!

Luna said:"It taste better by eating using your hand"

What a fascinating and friends-unioning dish! Haphappypy eat kau jam! kin kau jam pai nai!

Thousand of Thanks to Auntie Pauline!

Meena Curry House

3 February 2008....

Although CH is greedy in eating and he can eat whatever stuff that can put into his mouth, but there're not many food once he thinks of it will make his soliva overflow. The Nasi Daun Pisang at Mee Curry House is one of them.

Everytime CH back to Kay Bee, he sure will visit this restaurant untill the bosses already recognise him. Don't talk much, let's take a look at the mouth-watering Nasi Daun Pisang.

Clockwise from top left corner:
a) Ayam Masak Minyak - The flavour of the minyak mix thoroughly with the chicken. The "secret" herb the restautanteur mix with the chicken makes the chicken heavenly fragrant.:
b) Appadam - Take it when you feel spicy, or as a substitute spoon for the rice. Try it.
c) Rice with Fish Curry - CH always asks the staff to make the rice flooded with curry. The curry also cooked with the restauranteur's secret recipe. The fish head completely smashed the curry.
d) Mix vegetable - So so and ma ma.... Anyway, the chicken and the curry already make this nasi daun pisang outstanding.

The nasi daun pisang cost RM5.00 per pax. It is very cheap! And the bosses also told CH that he going to open one new outlet somewhere nearby Mid Valley. CH looking forward to his plan.

Breakfast @ Kay Bee

2 February 2008....

There are three breakfast in Kay Bee, Kelantan strongly recommend by CH.

1st:

Nasi Lauk by Wuai Chui. This stall is famous in Kelantan, and everybody calling it Wuai Chui. Why they called it Wuai Chui? Please find out from Local Kelantanese.
CH already addicted to the curry when he first tasted it when he was in primary school. Everytime he came back from KL, first breakfast in Kota Bharu must be this Nasi Lauk. The chicken is cooked long enough with the curry. All the curry flavour mixed thoroughly into the chicken. The pack-up of this nasi lauk will make this rice more delicious to eat. One bungkus(packet) will never be enough for CH. This nasi lauk will make CH "more eat more hungry".

2nd:
The noodle soup opposite of the Buddha Association. The soup is light and noodle is soft and slippery enough and there are lot of stuff like fish ball, meat ball, dried beancurd and tau ge and bla bla bla.. CH like to eat it with adding a big amount of vinegar chilli sauce. Try it!

3rd:
The kao jam, which mean mix rice literally translate in English. Kao jam is a rice cooked with 5 types of herb and spice, that's why the rice appeared to be greenish. The "kao" is to be mixed with minced coconut, minced fish, budu(fermented stale fish juice), mixed cucumber, "mani" vege, onion and lemon grass, with optional chilli and keropok(The fish biscuit). In Thailand, this dish is used for grand ceremony like wedding birthday and celebration. According to CH's kao jam making auntie, in Thailand, they might use up to 100 ty[es of spice and herb to make thos kao jam. For whoever from Kota Bharu, There are several stall you can buy this kao jam:
a) The breakfast shop at the left(as you facing chung cheng) of chung cheng school's main entrance.
b) Beside the Standing Buddha at Tumpat.
c) The stalls along Jalan Kebun Sultan

The Eye @ Kay Bee

2 February 2008....

Today is CH third night in Kay Bee. CH went to The Eye restaurant recommended by his big fat eater uncle.

The Eye Restaurant selling chinese and thaifood. The food there is cheap and nice.

The first dish is the Fried Oyster. The fried oyster is totally different with the western Malaysia one. The western Malaysia produce sticky and wet type of fried oyster, whereas east Malaysia like Kelantan produce dry, crunchy type of fried oyster. The dry fried oyster to be dip with the thai sweet spicy chilli sauce. Anyway, CH loves both type of fried oyster.

Second is the stir fried bitter grout and cucumber. This dish looked simple, but delicious!

Third is the Keng-som style steamed fish. The fish is steamed with special recipe of thai. One of the ingredient is the "heart" of the coconut and kang-kung. The soup is full with thai flavor. CH don't know how to best describe it, unless you come to taste it yourself.

Forth is the seafood "yam". Which "yam" mean mix in english. This "yam" is made of seafood, glass noodle, lime, vinegar, chilli, celery, onion and lettuce. This spicy sour stuff is the best appetiser which will make your mouth watering.

The total bill for above food is RM48.00 with a big bottle of soy milk. It is cheap!

P/S To CH's friends: When you all coming to visit Kelantan? CH will bring you around to taste the delicious food around Kelantan.

Oyster Porridge at Four Season

2 February 2008....

As the usual way while CH back to Kay Bee, he must go to the Four Season restaurant to have his favourite Oyster Porridge for lunch.

The Four Season is actually servicing Teow Chew dishes with porridge during lunch. While at night, it will turn to Chinese Restaurant, which is famous of the Curry Fish Head.

Some of the Teow Chew dishes for lunch. Please pay attention to the fish at the bottom of the pic. It is everybody all time favourite. The kembung fish is steamed and topped with spicy, salty, sour lime pickle soy bean sauce. CH and family used to mix it with the rice or porridge.

This is the Osyter Porridge. The porridge is lightly cooked(without ginger) in teow chew style, which the rice wasn't dissolve with the soup. The flavour is light but when you taste it, you will find a refreshing flavour of oyster, pickle chinese cabbage and chinese celery in the soup. CH can't stop eating this porridge once he starts eating it.

The fat and juicy oyster in the porridge.

All above cost RM48.00 with additional two bowls of plain porridge. A little bit expensive, but CH thinks still worth it.

Thaifood @ Kg. Kulim

1 February 2008...

Thaifood has been quite famous in Kota Bharu since Kota Bharu is just 30 minutes away from Thailand.Quite number of Thailand chef was employ by local resident to be chef in their restaurant.

Today CH went to one of the most famous Thaifood in Kelantan, which is Kg Kulim. The restaurant didn't renovvated like a restaurant, it is just look like the kampung house, that's why lot of people like it because it give a very kampung feel to dine in with. The food here was unique and taste like home-made.

This Restaurant is just beside the KTM railway. CH could see the train passed by when he waiting for the dishes to be prepared.

Before the food served, the thoughtful restauranteur give us the soy sauce with garlic, chilli and chinese celery.

1st dish is the Hong-bak, which mean the closed-meat. The name actually mean the food is cooked in a closed pot for a long period of time. The dish is cooked with anis, salted soy bean, black soy sauce, chicken and pork. This dish taste unique and wonderful! The gravy of this dish is best to mix with the white rice.

2nd is the stir fried tau ge. The tauge is fat and long and crunchy. Unlike local Tauge.

3rd is the lime steamed fish. The fish is steamed with lot of spicy and sour ingredient such as: Chillies, tomato, lime juice, assam, chinese celery, and mushroom. The fish is okay but the steamed-soup seem lack of sourness that night. May be the chef mixdosed it.(And hopefully CH's thought is correct).

4th is the Curry coconut milk prawn with glass noodle. CH and Luna love this dish very much. The curry is mouthwatering, and the flavour of curry and prawn mixed thoroughly into the glass noodle. The prawn is big and fresh, the flavour of curry goes into the prawn also.

The last one is the kampung styled roast kampung chicken. Please note the chicken is kampung chicken, which mean wild chicken. The wild chicken is really chewy and hard. But CH really loves to eat wild chicken. Although the chicken is hard and chewy, but it really taste much more better than commercial chicken. And the wild chicken is much more healthy to eat also.

Tonight's meal is really satisfying CH's taste bud. When CH and family leave the restaurant, the restaurant is getting more crowded. So can you imagine how nice is the food here?
